Downers Grove Police Officers have a new three-year agreement. The contract was resolved in Interest Arbitration, about one year before the contract expires.
Wage increases of 3.0%, 2.0% and 2.0% were awarded. The Union successfully fought off the Village’s final wage offer amounting to the same wage increases as agreed to by the Firefighters and the Police Sergeants. The Arbitrator also awarded a discipline provision whereby officers will have their choice of proceeding to grievance arbitration or the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners if they wish to dispute suspensions or terminations.
The unit bargained an increase in vacation time at 20 years of service (180 hours). Also, an increase in FTO pay was negotiated and bereavement time was revamped.
The Union Bargaining Team, comprised of Scott Buzecky, Brian Mitera, Jeff Giermann, Dave Pacheco and Nick Linklater, did an outstanding job. This was the first interest arbitration for the police in Downers Grove. The unit filed for arbitration only after careful consideration of the issues and a thorough and analytic review of their options. The results proved the time and attention they gave to the process was worthwhile. Attorney Gary Bailey assisted the team in negotiations and at arbitration.
